7. Share Metacognition
Research says…Experts know what strategies they use to learn or think about a problem and can adjust these strategies as needed, this is metacognition. Teaching and encouraging team members to engage in metacognition increases the team’s overall expertise (Day, Gronn, & Salas 2004).
8. Encourage team adaptability.
Research says…Adaptability is the ability to change performance processes in response to the environment. Experts are good at this because they know how to facilitate others through these phases of adaptation too (Salas, Rosen, Burke, & Goodwin, 2008).
9. Get stress exposure through training before experiencing it on the job.
Research says…When training familiarizes trainees with environmental stressors and builds trainees’ confidence in their ability to perform in uncertain and stressful conditions, then such training diminishes the impact of stress on the quality of that team’s decisions (Paris, Salas, & Cannon-Bowers, 2000).
10. Use team training developed by team leaders and context experts.
Research says…Training developed and implemented by leaders and task experts survives longer, enjoys better student transfer of learning, and results in bigger payoffs for the organization (Adelsberg & Trolley 1999).
